By Aaron Humes: Has Belize beaten back the COVID-19 pandemic?

The latest figures from the Ministry of Health and Wellness show a total of 17 new cases for the week of October 18 to 24 – but only 19 active cases of the virus countrywide.

It suggests that – pending any introduction of new variants of the virus – the pandemic here is almost over.

A total of 68,943 cases have been reported countrywide to date, with 687 persons dying as a result.

Seven of the new cases were reported in the Belize District including three in Belize City and two in San Pedro Town; six in the Cayo District, including three in Greater Belmopan (San Martin and Maya Mopan) and one in San Ignacio Town; two in Dangriga Town and one in Corozal Town.

Around half the national population including children has been vaccinated against the virus.
