By Breaking Belize News Staff: A 64-year-old man from Belize City has been sentenced to prison time after pleading guilty to the crime of theft.

Calvin Meighan appeared in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court on Monday, accused of breaking into the warehouse of a hardware store in Ladyville Village on October 21 and stealing $403.80 worth of items.

In court Meighan immediately pleaded guilty saying, “I am Diabetic and I have prostate cancer and I was trying to buy my medication but that’s no excuse for stealing,” Meighan said.

He had pleaded with the court for a fine, but considering he had recently picked up a charge of theft in August, he was sentenced to five months at the Belize Central Prison.
