United Democratic Party disqualifies 52 signatures on recall petition, dooming it to failure

By Aaron Humes: United Democratic Party (UDP) chairman Michael Peyrefitte suggested on Monday that today’s vetting of signatures on the recall petition against Party Leader Moses “Shyne” Barrow could take as little as two hours.

And by this afternoon, he had written to Party vice-chairman and one of the originators of the petition, Alberto August, that it had failed to reach the threshold required to trigger a recall convention.

43 persons requested that their signatures be retracted from the petition; four persons were alternate delegates who were not qualified to sign; two persons had resigned from their roles and are not qualified to sign; and three are not delegates at all.

Additionally per Peyrefitte, eleven pages containing 66 signatures did not carry the proper plea of the petition on the heading or elsewhere on the page, “casting doubt as to whether (those signing) were aware of what they were signing.”

So while Barrow may have jumped the gun on Monday, it appears his prediction has come through and he remains Party Leader.

What comes next is yet to be seen, although unlike with the National recall of elected representatives act, party members may have multiple goes at removal. Most likely, as both sides at least appear to agree on, there will be an attempt to restore party unity after a fractious three years of infighting.
