Community creates sandbag barrier to stop erosion in Monkey River

Posted: Wednesday, October 26, 2022. 8:42 am CST.

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: On Monday, October 10, 2022, flooding was reported in several parts of Belize and a photo went viral of a beach house collapsing into the Sea in Monkey River.

The wooden house fell into the sea due to the erosion caused by rough seas associated with Tropical Storm Julia.

The community is now working together to create a sandbag barrier to save 2 homes that remain at the seaside in Monkey River Village.

During an interview with PGTV, residents said that the dams in the river stop the flow of the current that pushes the sand toward Monkey River. This affects the village and causes erosion.

According to residents, the dams serve to extract water for the banana farms.
