By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Sean Young scored a crunch time goal in the 90th minute to lead Port Layola to a 1-0 victory over homestanding Wagiya keeping the Belize City side’s Premier League of Belize (PLB) playoff hopes alive.
Young now has seven goals to his credit tying for second place along with San Pedro Pirates’ Horace Avila and Verdes’ Luis Ibarra.
Port Layola now have 16 points, one short of Progresso and two more than Wagiya going into the final games of the PLB Closing Championship regular season. That translates into Progresso and Port Layola vying for the final playoff spot as Wagiya are virtually out of the picture due to their -4-goal difference. While Wagiya can only total 17 points, if there were a tie in points their negative goal difference would put them out unless they were to rout Benque United, Progresso lose, and Port come up with nothing more than a draw.
Progresso, who can total 20 points, have the better record and better probability going into the final match considering they are playing against third-place San Pedro Pirates in Orange Walk, while Port are facing leaders Altitude away at Independence.
So, look out for fireworks this weekend as the regular season closes. But before that, Altitude host San Pedro in the other backmatch on Wednesday night in Independence.
