Special Envoy’s Wonder Woman is Yucatec Cultural Ambassador, Felicita Cantun

Today’s feature is on Felicita Cantun, a cultural Ambassador of the Yucatec Maya.

Cantun, a proud native of the vibrant village of Yo Creek was an educator for over 30 years.

Even after retiring from the classroom, Cantun continues to visit schools across the country to promote the Yucatec Maya culture. 

She is fluent in Maya and uses her knowledge to teach the young generation about embracing their indigenous heritage.

 In 2013, Felicita translated the national anthem in Maya Yucatec Language and taught children to sing it. Her students are able to sing the Belize National Anthem in Maya. 

Felicita is also the founder of the Sacred Mayan ball game and “Ek Balam” (Black Jaguars) team which represents Belize in the Mundo Maya Tournament every year since 2015 and has brought the championship to Belize on several occasions. 

She also works to maintain the spiritual aspect of the culture and performs Maya Maya baptisms (Jeets’ Meek’).

“Felicita is an active cultural leader noted through several initiatives she has spearheaded representing the Yucatec Maya Culture nationally and internationally, and for this we recognize her,” the Special Envoy noted.
