Controversial allowances for government CEO’s being doubled from $750 to $1,500

Posted: Thursday, October 27, 2022. 10:02 am CST.

By Benjamin Flowers: A leaked Government of Belize memo shows that the living expense allowance and entertainment allowance paid to Chief Executive Officers are being doubled.

The memo, which originated from the Office of the Prime Minister on September 8, said that with effect from July 1, 2022, these allowances would be increased from $750 to $1,500. The Public Service Union (PSU) has said that when it queried the increase with the Government of Belize (GOB), the union was told that the increase is to account for inflation.

These allowances were a major point of contention during the 2021 industrial actions held by the PSU, Association of Public Sector Senior Managers, and the Belize National Teachers Union, as GOB prepared to implement a 10 percent salary reduction on teachers and public officers in the name of austerity.

The joint union negotiating team at that time stressed that the government could not be serious about austerity if thousands of dollars were spent monthly on those allowances.

GOB has reportedly still not agreed to meet with the unions to discuss means of assisting teachers and public officers to deal with inflation.
