By Benjamin Flowers: This Sunday, October 30, 2022, the National Kriol Council (NKC) will be hosting a special memorial service to honor Kriol cultural cornerstone, Artist Emeritus Myrna Manzanares (M.B.E.).
The service will be held at All Saints Church in Belize City at 8:00 a.m. and coincides with what would have been Manzanares’s 76th birthday.
Маnzаnаrеѕ раѕѕеd аwау іnѕіdе thе Іntеnѕіvе Саrе Unіt оf thе Каrl Неuѕnеr Меmоrіаl Ноѕріtаl (КНМН) оn Тuеѕdау, Dесеmbеr 21, 2021 whіlе battling аn undеtеrmіnеd hеаlth соndіtіоn. She was laid to rest on December 29, 2021, with her funeral service at All Saint’s and her body buried in her hometown, Gales Point Manatee.
Manzanares was one of the founding members of the NKC, and one of the leading cultural activists who fought to have Kriol recognized as an official language. Manzanares, known affectionately as Miss Myrna was an author, storyteller, and cultural ambassador, who also lent her voice to advocacy for a number of causes including women’s rights, the protection of young girls, and substance abuse prevention.
She was also a part of the national response to the HIV/AIDS epidemic, having served as chair of the National AIDS Task Force and president of the Addiction Alert Rehabilitation Center.
