UDP condemns the government’s decision to double allowances for CEOs

Posted: Thursday, October 27, 2022. 5:06 pm CST.

By Benjamin Flowers: The United Democratic Party has condemned a decision by the Government of Belize to increase living and entertainment allowances for Chief Executive Officers (CEO) from $750 to $1,500.

A memo from the Office of the Prime Minister dated September 8, was leaked today, showing that the allowances had been doubled as of July 1. The UDP issued a statement earlier today, noting that GOB decided to implement the 100 percent increase on these allowances while increments for teachers and public officers are still frozen.

“In the face of shortages of medical supplies and equipment, which include gloves, medical tape, gauze, and medications in the public health facilities, CEOs are receiving a 100% increase in allowances,” the UDP said. “The UDP strongly denounces this latest disrespect being shown to the Public Officers and the Belizean people.”

The party also called on the government to rescind this allowance increase and make funds available to reinstate the public officer’s increments and purchase essential medical supplies which are currently scarce in the country.
