Cabinet Secretary Stuart Leslie “CEO allowances were not doubled”

Posted: Friday, October 28, 2022. 6:54 pm CST.

By Benjamin Flowers: Cabinet Secretary Stuart Leslie said today that reports being published in the media of Government CEO’s having allowances doubled were inaccurate.

Leslie held a press briefing in Belize City, following the leak of a memo from the Office of the Prime Minister, saying that entertainment and living allowances for CEOs were being adjusted from $750 to $1,500 a month. He explained that the cut in allowances for CEO’s was implemented in 2018 by the Barrow administration, and continued under the Briceno administration in light of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Leslie said that due to the hard work of the government, Belize’s economy rebounded and put the government in a position where it could restore funds that were cut for austerity measures to assist with economic recovery.

“CEO’s volunteered to give up these allowances because we were at the time in a crisis, we accepted this in good faith that when things were restored we would get back our allowances, just as the Unions got back their 10 percent salary increase,” Leslie said.

Leslie added that, despite statements recently made by the President of the Public Service Union that the government has not been willing to negotiate the removal of the freeze on increments for public officers, meetings are scheduled in the near future to have those discussions.
