Man caught red-handed by police riding off with high school cash pan after burglary remanded to prison

By Breaking Belize News Staff: A 43-year-old Belize City resident has been remanded to the Belize Central Prison after being charged with burglary.

Denfield Lemoth appeared unrepresented in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court on Thursday, charged with a single count of burglary with respect to Canaan Seventh Day Adventist High School, which was broken into on October 23.

He pleaded not guilty to the charge; however, the prosecution objected to bail on several grounds. Police prosecutor Sergeant Christopher Smith asked the court to consider the prevalence of burglaries at this time, and the fact that Lemoth has several convictions for crimes of dishonesty including burglary and handling stolen goods, and said that he feels if Lemoth is granted bail, he will commit another offense during that time.

The court agreed with the objections and remanded Lemoth until December 29.

The school’s accountant called the police around 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday to report a burglary, after viewing surveillance footage that there was someone in his office. Quick police response led to the apprehension of the suspect with the cash pan, containing a total of $381 in his possession.
