Bandits vs Verdes: Belize biggest football rivalry plays out tonight in Belmopan

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Belmopan Bandits are having their worst season ever. It’s so bad that they are in last place with only eight points to show from 13 games played. But that doesn’t stop them from bragging that they have more championships than their final opponents in the Premier League of Belize’s Opening Championship.

“We play our final game at home against Verdes FC, the club that is still second to the Bandits in the number of Championships won,” said the Bandits in a social media post on Thursday.

The two face off on Saturday night at 7:30 pm at the Isidoro Beaton Stadium in Belmopan.

Over the last few years, the Bandits have had the upper hand over the Green Machine, but this season, as they entered a rebuilding mode, they’ve suffered. Verdes pounded them 5-0 in the first round on September 11 on goals by Paraguayan Luis Ibarra, Trimayne ‘Pepa’ Harris, Mexican Edwin Villeda, Justin Trapp, and Argentine Facundo Garnier.

And they mean to do it again tonight. But, as a matter of pride, the Bandits are waiting for them, aiming for revenge.

“Come out and cheer on our young boys as we prepare for a better closing season,” said the Bandits.

Other than the perennial rivalry, Verdes is out to cement their second position which will give them a home-field advantage over the San Pedro Pirates. Sporting 24 points, a win ensures that they will play the second game of the semifinals against the very same Pirates at home. A draw might be enough, considering San Pedro, who have 22 points, could total 25 with a win but would have to overcome a much better goal difference that Verdes already hold.

The Bandits are locked into last place regardless of the score.
