Drunken man violently beats wife while accusing her of having an affair with a minor; Court imposes fine instead of prison time

By Breaking Belize News Staff: A 42-year-old Belize City man was fined in court this week, after he beat his wife while in a drunken rage on two separate occasions, accusing her of infidelity.

Sepherino Cho appeared in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court on Friday, charged with two counts of common assault. In a report to police Cho’s wife said that on October 23 and 26, Cho came home drunk and accused her of being a “cougar” and alleged that she was having an affair with a 17-year-old male minor. Cho reportedly beat her badly on both occasions.

In court, Cho immediately pleaded guilty to the charges, apologizing to the court and admitting that he needs counseling. The Magistrate took into account his early guilty plea but said that he needed to justify why he should not be put in jail, given the attacks happened on two separate occasions.

Cho stressed that he was moving out of his home to keep the peace, but being in jail would make him unable to provide for his children as he is the sole provider for his family.

The court fined Cho $800 per offense plus $5 cost of court per offense for a total of $1,610. He was also placed under a $500 peace bond for the next six months. The Magistrate also instructed Cho to access counseling services through the Department of Human Services.
