By Benjamin Flowers: Community Police Officers from across the country met with the newly appointed Commander of the National Community Policing Unit, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Howell Gillett on Friday, to discuss the way forward for the unit.
A total of 70 officers gathered at the Banana Bank Lodge in the Cayo District, to discuss making the unit a more problem-solving and preventive unit of the Belize Police Department.
Gillett, who assumed the leadership of the Unit on October 1, replacing ACP Aaron Guzman, told Breaking Belize News that the officers also received presentations from representatives of the Community Rehabilitation Department on Police and Court diversion programs.
“Our COP officers are also being told that we must emphasize that their role is a proactive problem-solving one that occurs in a systematic and routine fashion. Rather than responding to crime only after it occurs, community policing encourages agencies to proactively develop solutions to the immediate underlying conditions contributing to public safety problems,” Gillett said.
Gillett’s last posting was as the head of the Police Eastern Division, where he implemented several initiatives to improve the quality of life for police officers. He has been replaced by Senior Superintendent Hilberto Romero.
