Tracy Taegar Panton hopes UDP will reconsider ousting Patrick Faber as Collet Standard Bearer

By Benjamin Flowers: Albert Division Area Representative Tracy Taegar Panton is hoping that the United Democratic Party (UDP) will reconsider its decision to oust long-standing member Patrick Faber as the Standard Bearer for the Collet Division in favor of political newcomer Ian Jones.

Panton took to social media this weekend, lamenting the decision and voicing concerns about its implications.

“The decision of our Party’s Nominations Committee not to allow the Hon Patrick Faber, our longest standing; longest serving, most winning, most Senior UDP Parliamentarian not to contest the next General Elections under a UDP Party banner is misguided in my view and a monumental misstep by our party,” Panton said.

She called on the party to refrain from letting internal differences hinder the work of the party and reminded that the party belongs to all its members. With respect to the endorsement of Jones, Panton felt that the prudent course of action is to let the people choose their representative.

“Let the people of Collet have their say. Let the voices of our UDP supporters be heard. Power, I maintain, belongs in the hands of the people,” Panton said.

Last week, a letter sent to Faber by the nominations committee was leaked to the media. In the letter, Faber was informed that he had failed to comply with a directive from the National Party Council to remove Facebook posts that were against the party’s code of conduct, in time to be considered for the position of standard bearer. Consequently, Jones will be endorsed as the new Standard Bearer.

In response to this rejection, Faber held a press conference at his constituent headquarters, sending a message to the party that he will run for the Collet division, with or without a UDP banner.
