By Benjamin Flowers: The United States National Hurricane Center (NHC) says that the area of low pressure moving across the central Caribbean Sea on a path to Belize has a high chance of becoming a tropical depression within the next few days.
The NHC’s latest update, issued this morning, says that currently, those in Jamaica should monitor the system closely as this area may produce locally heavy rainfall over portions of the Lesser Antilles, the Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, Hispaniola, and Jamaica during the next couple of days, regardless of its development.
“Environmental conditions are forecast to be conducive for additional development, and a tropical depression is likely to form in the next couple of days while the system moves west-northwestward at 10 to 15 mph over the central and northwestern Caribbean Sea,” the NHC said.
The NHC’s report also said that the system has a 70 percent chance of formation within the next 48 hours, going as high as an 80 percent chance within the next five days.
The low pressure area in the Western Atlantic has increased shower and thunderstorm activity, but only has a 10 percent chance of development within the next 48 hours. The forecast remains unchanged at 10 percent within the next five days.
