By Benjamin Flowers: The 15th Annual Japan Day Festival was held in Belize City over the weekend, celebrating Japanese culture and the country’s friendship with Belize.

The event was held at the Ramada Belize City Princess on Sunday and featured displays of traditional Japanese food, art, clothing, and music. There were also information booths about Japan and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and the work it does in Belize.

One of the major attractions of the event, the cosplay competition, where fans of Japanese anime dress up as their favorite characters, also made its return.

Asako Solis, one of the organizers, explained that the festival was the first in-person event since COVID-19 restrictions were lifted, noting that there were virtual events held in 2020 and 2021.

Japanese Ambassador H.E. Kazuhiro Iryu said that he was overwhelmed to see the level of interest and support shown by Belizeans for Japanese culture, evidenced by the massive turnout for the five-hour event.

“There were a few thousand people, easily,” the Ambassador said. “This year marks the 40th anniversary of diplomatic relations [between Belize and Japan] so this year is very special for us.

To mark the 40th anniversary of diplomatic relations the Japanese Community in Belize had planned a week’s worth of activities this week; however, the pending arrival of Tropical Cyclone 5 has forced some of the events to be postponed.
