BREAKING: Belize under hurricane watch

Posted: Monday, October 31, 2022. 1:18 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: As of midday, Prime Minister and chairman of the National Emergency Management Organization (NEMO) John Briceño has declared that Belize is under hurricane watch along its entire coastline.

Tropical Storm Lisa is presently on a track toward Belize and is expected to make landfall as a hurricane within 36 to 48 hours. This is represented by a red flag with a black center dot at all signal centers countrywide.

The public is advised to put their individual emergency disaster plans into effect, including preparations to voluntarily relocate to safe shelters if necessary. Public and private essential agencies, utility companies, and non-essential agencies must immediately implement plans of action, including the closure of schools, securing of workstations, the release of workers, and securing of ports of entry.

All businesses should implement their disaster plans. NEMO must be prepared to open adequate shelters wherever necessary and to conduct Search and Rescue operations where lives are at risk.
