By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Progresso qualified to the Premier League of Belize (PLB) semifinals on a 2-2 draw against the San Pedro Pirates at the People’s Stadium in Orange Walk on Sunday.
Even though they didn’t need it in the end, Ethali’s Rivero’s last minute goal in the first minute of injury time, gave Progresso a 2-2 draw against San Pedro and more that justified their inclusion on the top four because they qualified on their own and not because the other scores put the there.
As it stands, considering that both Port Layola and Wagiya lost their finals games, Progresso could have qualified even if they had lost. But their draw put them at 18 points, two more than Port and four more than Wagiya.
San Pedro were first to get on the scoreboard when Horace Avila scored his eighth goal of the season in the seventh minute. It took a while for Progresso to even the score, but they did in the 69th through the efforts of Leocadio ‘Peely’ Briceño. However, San Pedro drew blood again in the 87’ when Erick Izquierdo found the net for the 2-1 lead. This time, however, and with time running out, Progresso responded fast as Ethali Rivero, on Briceño assist, nailed the second goal for the 2-2 draw.
Progresso will now face leaders Altitude in the semifinals.
