Taximan who discharged firearm in front of passengers spared prison time

By Breaking Belize News Staff: This week the Belize City Magistrate’s Court spared a Belize City taxi driver from prison time for discharging a firearm in public and imposed a fine instead.

Thirty-three-year-old Mervin Domingo appeared in court represented by attorney Orson Elrington, and immediately pleaded guilty to the charge of discharging a firearm in public. In court, Domingo said that he was sorry for his actions and assured that he would never do anything like that again.

Elrington asked the court to temper justice with mercy, as Domingo is the father of a 10-month-old child and the sole provider for his household.

The Magistrate, considering the early guilty plea, Domingo’s remorse, and clean criminal record prior to the incident, fined him $1,200 plus the $5 cost of court.

On October 28th, police responded to a call of shots fired and learned that a blue van parked outside Thirsty Thursday Bar and Grill on Newtown Barracks, had sped off and shots were fired from it.

Police later detained the driver and five occupants in the van for discharging the firearm in public as well as possession of an unlicensed gun and ammunition; however, Domingo, who is a licensed firepower holder, admitted that he was the one that fired the shots.
