Teachers in San Pedro protest after not being paid for months

Posted: Tuesday, November 1, 2022. 10:23 am CST.

By BBN Staff: On Monday, teachers from Holy Cross Anglican Primary in San Pedro took to the streets in protest after not being paid since September.

Helen Melendez, a teacher and BNTU rep at the school told 7News Belize that apart from not getting paid since September, some teachers haven’t been getting their “hardship” allowances.

Melendez says that 7 teachers on staff haven’t gotten paid since September and the entire staff haven’t received the $200 hardship allowance.

“Now, we live on San Pedro is pretty much expensive and most people are aware of that and teachers find a hard time to survive only with their salaries, so they are saying that they want their hardship, but they cannot wait another 6 months for this year. Most teachers here pay rent. Out of our staff, I think it’s only about a handful of us and when I say that, maybe about of us on staff that actually live on the island, everybody else they either come from Orange Walk, Belize City – from different places. Therefore, these teachers when they come here, they definitely need to find some place that they need to rent,” Melendez said.

BBN notes that several teachers from another Anglican school in Cayo also shared on social media that they haven’t gotten paid for 2 months.
