BREAKING: Belize to enter state of emergency in central zone as Lisa makes landfall

Posted: Wednesday, November 2, 2022. 12:20 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: Prime Minister John Briceño issued an audio message, explaining that he has spoken to the Attorney General to prepare the documents to enact a State of Emergency (SOE). The SOE is expected to begin at 3 o’clock this afternoon for the Belize and Stann Creek districts only.

In the message, the Prime Minister states, “That means that everybody will have to stay indoors, but it will only be for the Belize and Stann Creek Districts; it’s not going to affect… us in the north, Orange Walk and Corozal.” It ends when the all clear is given.

The Prime Minister added that fortunately, the storm is moving too fast to add strength before landfall, but flooding in Belize City will be a problem because of its position just above sea level as well as a storm surge of two to five feet.

The P.M. asked Belizeans to be careful: “Let’s wait it out, let’s pray, let’s reach out to each other and whatever help we can give let’s do so.”

Earlier reports suggested some people were still moving around in vehicles ahead of Lisa’s arrival. We will have details of the 12 p.m. update from the National Hurricane Center in Miami shortly.
