Governor-General issues proclamation for State of Emergency in Belize and Stann Creek Districts

By Aaron Humes: Breaking Belize News (BBN) has received a copy of the signed proclamation by Governor-General Dame Froyla Tzalam, declaring a state of emergency in the Belize and Stann Creek Districts.

The proclamation is made by authority of the Constitution, sections 18 (2) to (5), which declares that the Governor-General has been satisfied that a public emergency exists in Belize for the purpose of the Constitution as a result of, in this case, a hurricane, and specifically in these districts.

The Constitution provides that the order can apply only to part of Belize, and shall remain in force for at least one month in the first instance but can be extended for up to twelve months, and subsequently be revoked by resolution of the National Assembly.

Therefore, the order states that it begins at 3 p.m. today, November 2, and shall, unless previously revoked, remain in force until the “All Clear” is given by the National Emergency Management Organization (NEMO), but in any case not longer than a month though may be extended to twelve months as determined by resolution of the National Assembly.
