Hurricane Lisa batters Belize knocking down houses and electric posts and causes major flooding

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Hurricane Lisa made landfall in Belize City with strong winds, torrential rains, and storm surges this afternoon.

Photos and videos on social media show several houses being destroyed by strong winds, fallen electric posts, and major flooding across Belize City.

A picture also showed parked airplanes at the Philip Goldson International Airport turned over due to the strong winds.

Maximum sustained winds are estimated to be near 75 mph (120 km/h) with higher gusts.  

Lisa is expected to weaken as it moves farther inland.

The public is urged to remain indoors and keep informed.
