International News: Former 2-term President, Lula wins Presidential election in Brazil

Posted: Wednesday, November 2, 2022. 9:16 am CST.

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: On Tuesday, Brazilian President, Jair Bolsonaro did not concede defeat to his rival, Lula da Silva in his remarks after Sunday’s election, Reuters report.

However, Bolsonaro authorized his chief of staff, Ciro Noguiera to begin the transition process with representatives of leftist President-elect Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.

Bolsonaro issued an official comment 44 hours after the election results and the delay raised concerns that he would seek to cast doubt on the narrow result.

During that time, supporters blocked highways to protest his defeat and some called for a military coup to stop former president Lula from returning to power.

In an official address, Bolsonaro thanked those who voted for him and said he would abide by the constitution, which stipulates a transition of power on Jan. 1.

“The current popular movements are the fruit of indignation and a sense of injustice about the way the electoral process took place,” he said.

Bolsonaro did not mention Former 2-time President, Lula da Silva, who narrowly beat him on Sunday, at all.

With all the votes counted, Lula had 50.9% of the valid votes against Bolsonaro’s 49.1%.

Leaders from around the world joined in congratulating Lula including US President Biden saying the win came “following free, fair, and credible elections”.

The 77-year-old 2-time President and former union leader, Lula ran on a campaign of upholding democratic values.

Lula served as Brazil’s President for 2 consecutive terms from 2003 to 2007 and 2007 to 2011.
