National Hurricane Center projects Lisa to make northwest turn toward Guatemala, Mexico after landfall

Posted: Wednesday, November 2, 2022. 12:32 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: The noon update from the National Hurricane Center (NHC) in Miami places Hurricane Lisa 35 miles east-southeast of Belize City with estimated winds of 80 miles per hour, moving west at 14 miles per hour.

It projects that the system will make a gradual turn west-northwest after making landfall this afternoon, crossing into Guatemala and southeastern Mexico.

The NHC says some strengthening is still possible before landfall. The rapid weakening will occur after the center of Lisa moves inland. Hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 15 miles from the center and tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 70 miles.

Full hurricane conditions should be expected beginning later this afternoon. Lisa is expected to produce rainfall amounts of 4 to 6 inches with local amounts to 10 inches across Belize, northern Guatemala, and the southern portion of the Mexican state of Quintana Roo, southern Campeche, Tabasco, northern Chiapas, and far eastern Veracruz. This rainfall could lead to flash flooding conditions in these areas.

The next advisory is at three p.m. this afternoon.
