Students to return to classes on Monday; Curfew implemented for Belize District

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Prime Minister John Briceno and the Minister responsible for NEMO, Orlando Habet, Minister of Education, Francis Fonseca, Chief Met officer, Ronald Gordon, and Mayor of Belize City, Bernard Wagner hosted a press conference this evening to update the nation in the aftermath of Hurricane Lisa.

Prime Minister John Briceno began by thanking the media for keeping the nation informed during the hurricane.

PM Briceno said that the cabinet held an emergency meeting and has received a preliminary assessment of the damage caused by Hurricane Lisa.

The greatest impacts from Hurricane Lisa include damages to residential homes, agriculture, utility poles, commercial buildings, and localized flooding.

The National Emergency Management Organization (NEMO) noted that 378 people are in shelters across the country.

The Government of Belize is now responding to recovery efforts.

The Government of Belize has implemented a 7 pm to 6 am curfew from today until Sunday in the Belize District except for San Pedro and Caye Caulker. 

All schools return for regular classes on Monday, November 7, 2022.

The Prime Minister says that government employees are to report to work tomorrow.

PM Briceno thanked all frontline workers and encouraged everyone to work together to recover and rebuild.
