International News: El Salvador’s war against gang continue with destruction of members’ tombstones

Posted: Friday, November 4, 2022. 12:59 pm CST.

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: The Salvadoran Government continues its efforts in the war against gangs.

According to the Associated Press, the Salvadoran Government sent inmates into cemeteries to destroy the tombs of gang members at a time of year when families typically visit their loved ones’ graves.

The inmates destroyed tombs marked with “MS,” of the Mara Salvatrucha gang, in San Salvador on Tuesday.

Local reports say that the inmates destroyed almost 80 tombstones and erased gang-related graffiti.

Since March, the Central American nation has been under a State of Emergency as President Nayib Bukele’s administration launched special operations to fight gangs.

Over 56,000 people have been arrested in the country for alleged gang ties.

And while many organizations continue to call on the Salvadoran government to respect the human rights and dignity of those being detained, surveys show that 70% of Salvadorans support the government’s measures.
