Businessman Francis Gegg identified as accused heroin smuggler at Indian airport

Posted: Monday, November 7, 2022. 3:02 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: Further to our story of October 31 about a Belizean picked up at Indira Gandhi International Airport in New Delhi, India, with nearly 22 pounds of suspected heroin hidden in false compartments in his luggage, official documentation known to be in the possession of the Belize Ministry of Foreign Affairs has identified him by name.

Businessman Francis Marion Gegg of Belize City, according to a letter from the Indian Office of the Commissioner of Customs to the Belize High Commissioner for India on October 31, is alleged to have been arrested by authorities at the airport after arriving on a flight from Doha, Qatar, by way of Johannesburg, South Africa. He is accused of attempting to traffic 9.95 kilograms of the drug, an “off-white, powdery-colored substance” as described in the letter, and remains in judicial custody after appearing in court according to Indian news reports.

The letter to the High Commissioner asks that the family of Gegg be informed of his arrest and seeks to confirm the validity of the passport with which he was traveling.

We have reached out to Minister of Foreign Affairs Eamon Courtenay but as of this writing have received no response. We will continue to follow the story.
