Forecasters monitor Subtropical storm Nicole and another disturbance in Atlantic

Posted: Monday, November 7, 2022. 9:46 am CST.

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Forecasters at the National Hurricane Center (NHC) are closely monitoring Subtropical storm Nicole in the Atlantic.

Hurricane and storm surge watches have been issued for east Florida as Nicole approaches.

On the forecast track, the center of Nicole will approach the northwestern Bahamas on Tuesday, move near or over those islands on Wednesday, and approach the east coast of Florida by Wednesday night.

Maximum sustained winds are near 45 mph (75 km/h) with higher gusts.

Gradual strengthening is forecast during the next few days, and Nicole is forecast to be at hurricane intensity by Wednesday or Wednesday night while it is moving near or over the northwestern Bahamas.

Winds of 40 mph extend outward up to 275 miles (445 km) from the center.

Forecasters are also watching a well-defined area of low pressure located about 650 miles east of Bermuda continues to produce gale-force winds.

These conditions are expected to remain unfavorable for development today but may briefly become more favorable on Tuesday, and a short-lived tropical storm could still form as the system begins to move northward and then northeastward at about 10 mph.

The low is then forecast to merge with a cold front by the middle part of this week.

This system has a 60% chance of formation through the next 5 days.
