Commissioner Chester Williams said police officers should have been more sympathetic when making curfew arrests

By Benjamin Flowers: Commissioner of Police Chester Williams this week took issue with some arrests made for curfew violations in the aftermath of Hurricane Lisa.

Following the storm, Prime Minister John Briceno had announced a curfew for the entire Belize district, with the exception of Caye Caulker and Ambergris Caye, which ran from November 3-6. Williams said that at the time the announcement was made, many Belizeans were either without power or internet access, leaving them unaware of the curfew’s existence.

“That is where I had an issue. I think that the officers ought to have used more discretion considering the circumstances before just arresting people,” Williams said. “Yes, I do understand that they were doing their job as well, but there are times that we need to be more sympathetic or empathetic towards the issues of people.”

He also stressed that many of the arrests were made just after curfew hours, and that for the most part there was no one out on the streets late at night. Williams did not say if anything would be done in terms of dismissing the charges for those who were arrested who had no knowledge of the curfew.
