By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: The San Ignacio and Santa Elena Town Council and the Garifuna community in the Twin Towns have launched a calendar of activities leading up to November 19, Garifuna Settlement Day.
On November 1, 2022, the Garifuna flag was raised at the San Ignacio and Santa Elena Town Council, Victor Galvez stadium, and the Santa Elena sign.
The Battle of the drums was held last night at the Victor Galvez Stadium in San Ignacio.
This Friday, November 11, from 1 to 3 pm, a school rally will be held. This is being organized through the National Institute of Culture and History (NICH).
On November 11, 2022, a Cultural night will also be held at the Drift Inn in Santa Elena.
Sunday, November 13, there will be a Tribute to Thomas Vincent Ramos and an appreciation night for past Garinagu contributors to the community.
On November 15, there will be a culture expo at the Cayo Welcome Center from 9 am to 9 pm.
A fashion show displaying Garifuna attire will be held on Wednesday, November 16 at the Cayo Welcome center.
Garifuna awareness day will be on November 17.
November 18 will be a cultural night at the Cayo Welcome Center.
Garifuna Settlement Day activities include Yurumein, Mass, ceremony, drumming, parade, and a food sale at the Cayo Welcome Center.
