International News: Mexican officials accused of covering up woman’s murder

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Mexican officials are being accused of covering up the murder of Ariadna Lopez, 27, the BBC reports.

Anti-corruption officials are investigating Mexico’s attorney-general’s office in the central state of Morelos.

Last week, Lopez’s body was found on a highway in Morelos.

Authorities noted that Lopez had choked while drunk.

However, a second post-mortem done in Mexico City revealed that she had died of multiple force trauma.

Mayor of Mexico City, Claudia Pardo said that the Morelos attorney-general’s office “wanted to hide the femicide, presumably because of links with the presumed killer”. The Morelos attorney-general’s office has not commented.

Lopez’s disappearance and the discovery of her body have again shone a spotlight on murders of women in Mexico and their handling by state officials.

In 2021, Mexico recorded 1,004 femicides across the country.

Lopez went missing on October 30 after meeting friends in the trendy Condesa neighborhood of the capital.

Cyclists found her body 2 days later on a highway in neighboring Morelos state.

The Morelos state attorney’s office had carried out a post-mortem on her body and said that there were no visible signs of violence.
