“Police presence before and after Hurricane Lisa minimized burglaries,” says Police Commissioner

By Benjamin Flowers: Commissioner of Police Chester Williams, said this week that active police patrols in preparation for and after Hurricane Lisa, was a key factor in preventing burglaries last week.

Williams said that, while police have a major role to play in disaster management, pre and post disaster, the department made sure to maintain patrols on the streets until the final hour before Lisa made landfall.

“We did have a few cases of burglary but it was not at an alarming rate and that had a lot to do with the fact that the police maintained our presence until the very last hour before the storm and again were the very first on the street after the storm was over,” Williams said.

He added that there were a few incidents where people accused others of stealing their zinc roofing, but he said that those situations will be difficult to manage, particularly with the number of people who lost their roof due to the storm.

Williams also said that the post storm conditions have left many communities vulnerable to criminal elements but police will be doing their best to ensure that these communities are kept safe.
