By Rubén Morales Iglesias: “Sugar cane farmers in the north are preparing to descend on the city early tomorrow morning to help in the clean-up campaign,” wrote Minister of Agriculture Jose Abelardo Mai on social media late on Tuesday night.
According to Minister Mai, 40 farmers and members of the Sugar Industry Research and Development Institute (SIRDI) staff from Northern Belize are bringing four sugar cane loaders and other heavy equipment to help speed up the cleaning in Belize City which was hit very hard by Hurricane Lisa last week.
“Sugar Cane farmers are in solidarity with residents of Belize City affected by hurricane Lisa,” said Minister Mai while encouraging other farmers to join. Mai said the bus transporting the farmers was leaving the Belize Sugar Cane Farmers Association compound at 6:00 am. Mai said they are entering the city through the John Smith Road and the George Price Highway entering by Lord Ridge Cemetery before being deployed.
Mai said this morning he is organizing the farmers’ participation in the clean-up and Belize City Mayor Bernard Wagner is deciding where they are going to be working.
