Forty sugar cane farmers from the Belize Sugar Cane Farmers Association and staff members of the Sugar Industry Research and Development Institute (SIRDI) from Northern Belize traveled to Belize City on Wednesday to help in the clean-up campaign.
“In an amazing display of support and solidarity, cane farmers from the Belize Sugar Cane Farmers Association descended on Belize City to assist with the recovery efforts,” said a social media post by the Government of Belize Press Office.
“We are stronger when we stand together, and the love and unity in the wake of Hurricane Lisa will never be forgotten.”
According to Agriculture Minister Jose Abelardo Mai, the farmers brought four sugar cane loaders and other heavy equipment to speed up the cleaning in Belize City which was hard hit by Hurricane Lisa last week.
“Sugar Cane farmers are in solidarity with residents of Belize City affected by hurricane Lisa,” said Minister Mai.
The farmers were joined by Prime Minister John Briceño and other government ministers and officials.
