By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Continuing its programme to strengthen cooperatives, the Department of Co-operatives on Wednesday facilitated an exchange programme. Members of Western Mopan Farmers Co-operative of San Jose Succotz, Cayo traveled to Hopkins in the Stann Creek District to assist the Hopkins Farmers Co-operative.
“The purpose of the visit was to lend support and provide capacity building on cover structure (greenhouse) management,” said the Department of Co-operatives in the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security, and Enterprise (MAFSE)
“Both co-operatives have been recent beneficiaries of cover structures from the UNDP-GEF-SGP/BEST/Dept. of Co-operatives ‘Co-operatives Rapid Response to COVID-19 and 2020 Floods in Belize’ and have been cultivating bell peppers,” MAFSE said.
MAFSE said Hugo Miranda, Co-operative Education Officer and Felipe Puc, Chairman of Western Mopan Farmers Co-operative, led the session during which they evaluated the operations of the Hopkins farmers and made critical recommendations to improve and strengthen their efforts.
During the visit the irrigation system was reorganized, a string trellis was fitted, and a spray regimen was also instituted. The session also served to exchange information on production methods, marketing, and general best practices.
MAFSE said that after the exchange session, the Department of Co-operatives expects that the Hopkins Farmers Co-operative will have improved maintenance and upkeep of their greenhouse which should result in increased production.
