Former Commissioner of Police’s residence burglarized for guns; police detain suspect

Posted: Thursday, November 10, 2022. 3:23 pm CST.

By Aaron Humes: There was a burglary at former Commissioner of Police Allen Whylie’s house in Lemonal Village, Belize District, on Sunday night. A thief reportedly gained access to the property by prying open a metal grill door. Four guns and other items were stolen.

Police have confirmed that they have since recovered three of them in the Bypass Road area near Orange Walk Town and one next to his mother-in-law’s residence in the same village. One person is detained pending charges and the firearms are being tested while in police custody.

The ex-Commissioner was out of the country at the time and the Police could not say whether the suspect is familiar with the layout of the residence but did confirm that entry was unlawfully gained.

Police are satisfied for now that the firearms were safely kept but firearm owners do have a responsibility to ensure weapons are kept safely.

Investigations continue.
