By Aaron Humes: The United Democratic Party (UDP) is holding four standard bearer endorsement conventions on Saturday and Sunday, November 12 and 13, at Party headquarters on Youth for the Future Drive.
Party Leader and Leader of the Opposition Moses “Shyne” Barrow will be endorsed to run for a second term in the division of Mesopotamia, while Ian Jones, despite controversy, will be endorsed as the standard bearer for Collet.
On Sunday, it will be the turn of Regional Leader and Fort George candidate Melvin Hewlett and Port Loyola’s Philip “Superman” Willoughby to be endorsed.
The Party closed its candidate application and vetting process at the end of October with one sitting representative, Queen Square’s Denise Barrow, not seeking re-election. Collet’s Patrick Faber was de-selected amid personal issues and a row with the party’s leadership but vows to remain a UDP and contest the seat with or without the party’s banner.
Nonetheless, this kicks off election season in Belize in earnest, with Municipal elections coming in 2024 and the generals due by no later than February of 2026.
Contested conventions for the UDP are expected to begin in January despite the redistricting process still ongoing by the Election and Boundaries Commission. The Party is also electing new delegates to participate in the forthcoming National Convention, the party’s highest body.
We will have coverage on Saturday starting at 1 p.m.
