Belizean Fitzgerald ‘Palas’ Joseph wins silver at Pan American Masters Cycling Championships in Colombia

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Fitzgerald ‘Palas’ Joseph won the silver medal in the Men’s C2 Category (55-59) road championship at the Pan American Masters Cycling Championships in Barrancabermeja, Colombia on Saturday.

The Masters Category 2 is for riders from 55 to 59 years of age.

Joseph was second behind Hugo Barron of Mexico and ahead of Colombia’s Wilson Sanchez. The three and 13 other cyclists rode in together all clocking 1 hour, 44 minutes and 21 seconds for the 45-mile race.

Michael Wagner, the other Belizean in that race, finished 22nd in 1:58:22.

Renan ‘Cito’ Matus took fourth in the Masters A1 Category for riders 30-34. Matus stopped the clock at 2:19:32 for the 60-mile race. He had the same time as the winner, Colombia’s Jefferson Urrego, and four others.

In the Masters B2 Category, for riders 45-49, Roque Matus finished in sixth position in 2:19:06 in a 60-mile race. Matus was 2:37 behind the winner, Wilson Enrique López of Colombia, who clocked 2:16:29. Phillip Burns and Ryan Willoughby were retired in that race.

In the Masters C1 Category, for riders 50-54, Robert Liam Stewart finished 18th and Dwight Lopez was 20th in the 45-mile race. Both clocked 1:44:20 along with 21 other riders who trailed winner John William Barrera of Colombia by 23 seconds. Barrera’s time was 1:43:57.

On Friday, in the Individual Time Trial, Robert Liam Stewart was 5th in the C1 Category clocking 29 minutes, 26.30 seconds (29:26.30) in the 12.5-mile race. Stewart was 2 minutes and three seconds behind winner James Soto of Colombia, who clocked 27:37.20. Michael Wagner finished 18th in 34:38.74, 7:01 behind.

Renan Matus was 6th in the A1 Category with a time of 30:36:58, 4:00 minutes behind winner Jefferson Urrego, whose time was 26:36:31.

In the final day of the Pan American Masters Championships on Sunday, the eight Belizean cyclists will compete in criteriums.
