By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Institute of Archaeology in the National Institute of Culture and History (IA/NICH) says 14 archaeological reserves are now open to the public.

The IA/NICH, with the assistance of its staff and volunteer organizations and individuals, has been extremely busy since Thursday, November 3, the day after Hurricane Lisa hit Belize affecting most of the archaeological sites.

By the following day, Friday, November 4, the IA/NICH opened Serpon Sugar Mill, Nim Li Punit, Lubaantun, Santa Rita, Cerro Maya, and Cahal Pech.

Caracol followed on Sunday, November 6. On Monday, November 7, the IA/NICH opened Lamanai and Nohoch Che’en Caves Branch. Then, on Tuesday, Altun Ha, Barton Creek and the Actun Tunichil Muknal (ATM) caves followed.

Finally on Thursday, November 10, Xunantunich and El Pilar were opened.

All this while the work crew has been removing fallen trees, putting back signs, and repairing other damage caused by Lisa.
