International News: Cuba agrees to accept U.S. deportation flights

Posted: Saturday, November 12, 2022. 8:40 am CST.

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: U.S. officials confirmed to Reuters that Cuba has agreed to accept U.S. deportation flights carrying Cubans caught at the U.S.-Mexico border.

According to the report, U.S. officials say that U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has about a dozen Cubans in custody who failed an initial screening for asylum at the border.

Cuba reportedly agreed to accept occasional groups of deportees.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, regular deportations of Cubans were paused though the United States continued to deport a small number of Cubans via commercial airlines.

Statistics from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security shows that for the year 2020, about 1,500 Cubans were deported.

For the year 2022, U.S. authorities have made over 2.2 million migrant arrests at the U.S.-Mexico border in fiscal year 2022, higher than any year on record.
