San Pedro Pirates clash with Verdes tonight in PLB semifinals at San Pedro

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The San Pedro Pirates are determined to make it to the final of the Premier League of Belize’s Opening Championship but for that they must take down the defending champions, Verdes. Their first encounter in the home and away semifinals is set for tonight at 7:30 pm at the Ambergris Stadium in San Pedro.

The match promises to be extremely competitive considering that they’ve been evenly matched in their first two games in the present championship and that San Pedro were their most fierce rivals during the last championship when the Green Machine went undefeated.

San Pedro are led by Horace Avila and Erick Izquierdo Román. Avila is the PLB’s second top scorer of the championship having scored eight goals during the first phase of the championship. Izquierdo tallied five. Verdes, on the other hand, are counting on Paraguayan Luis Ibarra who netted seven goals and Trimayne ‘Pepa’ Harris who converted five.

In their first match in this championship neither team was able to score when they met at the Norman Broaster Stadium in San Ignacio on Sunday, August 28. Then they drew 2-2 at San Pedro’s Ambergris Stadium on Saturday, October 15, 2022. In that feud, the Pirates took a 2-0 lead on goals by Mario Chimal in the 7^th minute and Horace Avila in the 57^th. Verdes had to rally back and did so in the final 18 minutes on strikes by Harris in the 72^nd and Edwin Villeda Bernal in the 89^th.

While the San Pedro Pirates won the Closing PLB Championship in the 2018-2019 season, Verdes have won three titles since the inception of the PLB in December 2011. The Green Machine won the 2014-2015 Closing Championship, the 2017-2018 Opening Championship, and the 2019-2020 Opening Championship.

So, get set for a sizzler tonight at Ambergris Caye and then prepare for the return match in Cayo next week.
