Immigration Department moves against latest Haitian arrivals to Belize

By Aaron Humes: A group of Haitian nationals who arrived in Belize from El Salvador via Tropic Air on Thursday could face deportation following an investigation.

Immigration authorities have opened an investigation into their arrival and they are presently detained by Ladyville Police.

Earlier this year, Belize and Haiti signed an agreement to allow nationals of the French-speaking nation to come to Belize without a visa, provided they meet all other requirements and apply for a visa to stay for at least six months.

But amid continuing concerns about trafficking in persons and efforts by nationals of other countries in turmoil in the region to migrate to the United States in particular, authorities’ eyes and ears are finely tuned to look for suspicious activity among airline passengers and it appears one senior official who happened to be traveling on the same flight had their suspicion raised.
