By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Progresso FC are on the mission of their lives; they are out to take down Premier League of Belize leaders Altitude FC from Independence at the People’s Stadium in Orange Walk Town.

Progresso are a Corozal District club but play under the banner of the Orange Walk Football Association because Orange Walk Town is closer and more easily accessible than Corozal Town. Traditionally that’s the way it’s been. Today, the club will have the support of two districts behind them as they challenge the team that knocked champions Verdes out of the top spot. Certainly not an easy job, but something the surprising Northern semifinalists figure they can achieve if they put their all into it.

When they first met on Saturday, September 3, at the Michael Ashcroft Stadium in Independence, Altitude salvaged a 2-1 win on goals by their Colombian striker Andrés Orozco who found the net in the 10th and 48th minutes. Orozco finished the season as the top scorer with 11 goals. Marlon Gutierrez scored his first goal in the 21st in that match.

When they met again at the People’s Stadium in Orange Walk on Sunday, October 23, neither was able to find the net, finishing the 90 minutes in a 0-0 bottleneck. So, at this point they appear evenly strong.

Led by two National Team players who faced each other in their day, Charlie Slusher for Progresso and Wilmer Garcia for Altitude, the match promises to be an exciting exhibition of good football. Charlie might have been one of Belize’s best goalkeepers but whenever he was given the opportunity he played as a striker. His purely Belizean squad is a balance of defense and offense. Wilmer was a striker so his team, which has several foreign players led by Orozco, is more prone to be offensive minded but that doesn’t mean he doesn’t take care of the defense, but his, you could say, is more a mix of experience and youth with Ashley ‘Tosa’ Torres and Dalton Eiley leading the young blood.

Altitude, knowing the importance of the match, travelled on Saturday to Orange Walk where they had a training session at the People’s Stadium. They mean to leave no stone unturned enroute to winning the 2022-23 Opening Championship. Progresso mean to spoil all those plans.

The match kicks off at 3:30 pm.
