International News: Taiwan says Chinese fighter jets fly across Taiwan strait

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Taiwan officials say that China’s military flew 10 fighter jets and bombers near Taiwan on Saturday, the Associated Press reports.

The Taiwanese Defense Ministry says that China, in its intimidation attempts flew 10 aircrafts across the median line in the Taiwan Strait that separates Taiwan from mainland China.

In 1949, Taiwan and China split following a civil war that ended with the Communist Party in control of the mainland.

The island never has been part of the People’s Republic of China, but Beijing says it is obliged to unite with the mainland, by force if necessary.

There has been increased attempts to intimidate Taiwan this year with more reports of fighter planes and bombers flying near the island.

China and Taiwan have accused each other of using “dollar diplomacy” to lure countries into building official ties with them.

There are heightened tensions between Taiwan and China since China views Taiwan as its territory and has long vowed to “reunify” the self-governing democratic island.
