International News: 8 billion people living on planet Earth

Posted: Tuesday, November 15, 2022. 9:08 am CST.

By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: A baby born today somewhere in the world will become the 8 billionth person, according to a projection by the United Nations.

The United Nations says that the world’s growth is due to human development, people living longer, and improvements in public health, nutrition, personal hygiene, and medication.

“The milestone is an occasion to celebrate diversity and advancements while considering humanity’s shared responsibility for the planet,” UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said.

According to the Associated French Press, the increase in the global population is also due to higher fertility rates, particularly in the world’s poorest countries — most of which are in sub-Saharan Africa — putting their development goals at risk.

Many are concerned that 8 billion people are too many for planet Earth but analysts say that the issue is the overconsumption of resources by the wealthiest people.

“Some express concerns that our world is overpopulated,” said United Nations Population Fund chief Natalia Kanem. “I am here to say clearly that the sheer number of human lives is not a cause for fear.”
