By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: Guatemalan authorities have detained 2 American nationals, a man and a woman who were caught transporting over 150 Mayan artefacts in their car, BBC reports.
An archaeologist confirmed that almost all of the items were authentic and dated from pre-Hispanic times.
Only days earlier the same woman was stopped at the Guatemala City airport and detained for possession of pre-Hispanic treasures. Customs officials had found 2 Maya stone carvings in her bags.
The woman was charged with “smuggling national treasures” and released on bail on the condition that she does not leave Guatemala.
She was arrested for a 2nd time just a few miles southwest of Antigua.
Authorities say that they had 166 items in their vehicle, most of which are thought to date back to the time of the Maya.
