By Breaking Belize News Staff: A man who pleaded guilty to chopping his 79-year-old common-law-wife with a hatchet will have to wait until December to learn what his sentence will be.

Thirty-nine-year-old Shareef Muhammad Bilal appeared in the Supreme Court on Monday before Justice Ricardo O’Neil Sandcroft, for trial. The incident occurred in March, but at the start of the trial Bilal, with advice from his attorney, Oscar Selgado, changed his plea from not guilty to guilty.

Justice Sancroft accepted his guilty plea and set the date for the sentencing hearing and mitigation pleas for December 9.

The victim had reported to police that while she was in her kitchen on March 1, her husband came and hit her in the forehead with the hatchet, causing a cut wound.
