By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Following the recent announcement by the Cycling Federation of Belize (CFB) that elections for a new Executive Body will be held on Saturday, November 26, 2022, Tariq Cano said he will be vying for the post of President of the CFB.

Cano said his slate includes Giovanni Lovell for Vice President, Troy Gabb Jr for Treasurer, and Karen Vernon for Secretary and Zahir Figueroa, Kaya Cattouse, and Yadira Argueta for Committee Members.

“Let’s pump some fresh ideas, innovative thinking and action into Cycling in Belize for the next quadrennial and beyond,” said Cano in a social media post.

Cano promised that his “slate that will work hard and be productive to accomplish progress in cycling and for Belize.”

Cano is promising more races, youth development programs, a proper National Team selection process, higher participation in regional events, international training for cyclists, athletes’ insurance, open communication, ‘cycling for all’ initiatives, and accountability, among other promises.

Cano has been an active cyclist and race organizer. Through his foundation C.A.N.O. (Committed to Altruism and Nurturing Oneself), he has even taken teams to competitions abroad. Through CANO, he said he is assisting ten children with scholarships, helping “a few families now and then and in cycling as well”.

He has now put together a rather young but dynamic slate made up of young people including present day cyclists like Giovanni Lovell and Kaya Cattouse, who have excelled in the sports locally and have represented Belize internationally. San Ignacio-Santa Elena Deputy Mayor Zahir Figueroa, like Cano, has been very much involved with cycling and is also known for organizing races in the San Ignacio-Santa Elena area. Argueta, who according to Cano, has experience in the accounting and finance fields, has worked with the National Sports Council and is an avid cycling fan. Troy Gabb Jr has been very much in sports, basketball in particular, while Karen Vernon, Kaya’s mother, has been around cycling for many years and holds a wealth of experience.

After the CFB election announcement on November 7, the CFB has said nothing else on the elections and has not responded to an inquiry on who are postulating themselves for the executive body positions.

The CFB said it would confirm the venue and time later, but so far has made no announcement on that either.

Currently, the CFB is led by President Orson Butler and Vice President Dion Leslie.
